Pergolas, decking and gates

Timber pergolas, composite decking and gates — and the Planning Authority question first.

Before the timber, the permit. Malta's Development Notification Order does not use the words pergola or decking. A roof-level pergola is a roof structure, which can go through the notification procedure only if it is set back six metres from the front elevation, under 36 square metres, and not in an outside-development zone or on a scheduled building; otherwise it needs a full application, and Maltese guides put the Planning Authority fees at €200 to €600. Loose decking on a private terrace is a different question from a fixed structure; a timber gate in an existing opening outside the development zone is minor works. In a condominium the roof is a common part. Ask your perit before ordering.

A basic timber pergola runs €1,500 to €3,000 installed on a Maltese guide, which the calculator carries. Composite decking boards are about €69 a square metre to buy before joists and clips; laying is quoted on site. Gates run from a €49 fence gate to a €563 driveway gate supply only, and hanging is quoted.

What this covers

What it costs

The pergola band is a Maltese guide's installed figure; decking and gates have published Maltese supply prices, given in the notes, and no published fitting figure, so those lines are quoted on site.

A band, not a quote: the low end is a straightforward job with clear access, the high end is the same job with the complications a site visit finds. Materials are included where the line says so.

How it works

You deal with us, not with the workshop. We measure, we quote a fixed price, we bring in a joiner from the CheckYourTraders-verified network, and we stand behind the work. One point of contact, one contract, one invoice.

Questions people ask

Timber or aluminium pergola?
Timber is warmer and cheaper to start with and needs oiling; aluminium, from €2,725 motorised at a Maltese supplier, needs nothing and does not move. On a roof in Malta the sun decides more than the budget.
